Call for Entries Tips For Artists 2005 Art Horses 2006 Art Horses 2007 Art Horses The Equine Lexicon

Calling all Artists!!

7/18/2007

The art horses are slowly gathering in our corral.  Last week an art horse came to us all the way from an artist in Texas!!!  Cool beans!

But...we need more artists....so......

Frantic plea:  We have horses but no artists!!!  Where are y'all hiding???  Come on in to State of the Art and pick out a little horsie - you know, the one who will whisper its name to you (in a horse whisper, doncha know).  We have ribbons and beads and fabric and all kinds of supplies to share in case you have an idea but no art or craft supplies.  Call me!!!  Mar at 832-3900.  And tell your creative friends!  Need help getting started?  Call me and we'll arrange a "playdate!"

Calling all artists!!  Rivendell ReCreation Center, an all-volunteer not-for-profit therapeutic horseback riding organization in South Wales, New York is looking for artists to participate in our third annual exciting fund- raiser called Horsin' Around Rivendell.  In this project, 5  to 12 inch plastic, wood, china, metal or plush toy or model horse statues are being collected and decorated for auction to raise money for this most worthy cause.  We are also accepting donations of horse themed artwork in any media (original, reproductions, framed, unframed).

This event is being scheduled for Saturday afternoon, 2pm-6pm, September 29, 2007 at a the Buffalo Arts Studio on the fifth floor of the TriMain Building.  The deadline for completion and delivery of entries is Saturday  August 25th at 5pm..  There are NO entry fees for participating artists.

Horsin' Around Rivendell is open to three categories of artists:  Novice, Amateur and Professional.  The Novice category is for the student artist, age 18 and under.  The Amateur category represents all those folks who have never really considered themselves to be "artists" but they have this "great idea" and are eager to participate in this project.  The Professional category is for artists who have exhibited and/or sold their work.

The Art Horses will not be subdivided into any categories this year - but puns and art and fantasy are all acceptable ideas.  A great place to get an idea is my little essay The Equine Lexicon. You may study previous entries but please, no copying!  Each entry must have a NAME, and each entry must be accompanied by an application form which includes a brief description or story about your creation.  Think of it as a commercial for your Art Horse, to allow the auctioneer to interest the bidders in your horse.  This description is limited to 35 words or less, so think of it as yet another facet of your creativity!!!

Depending of course on the number of entries in each of the above artist categories, real horse show ribbons will be awarded to the winning artists.  There will be a Best in Show ribbon as determined by the judges and there will be a People's Choice ribbon, as determined by a public vote on the day of the auction.  Other ribbons will be awarded for first place, second, third - just like a real horse show!

Artists can decorate their own toy horses for this project, or a horse can be picked up at State of the Art, 1781 Hertel Avenue, Buffalo, New York.  State of the Art is open Tuesday through Friday 11AM to 6 PM and Saturday 1PM to 5 PM.  Finished Art Horse creations must be delivered or shipped to State of the Art by the August 25, 2007 deadline.  1781 Hertel Avenue, Buffalo, New York, 14216-3001.

Judges for this event are being contacted and will be announced soon. One artist who has agreed to be a judge this year is Brian Engler - he has officially run out of room for any more winning ribbons, so he has generously offered to help us award ribbons to others!   A downloadable PDF Application for Artists is available. Click the following to download your own Application for printing: Download PDF Application

All entries will be photographed and made available for public viewing on this website.

Join in the fun!  Decorate a horse that will help raise money for Rivendell.  Therapeutic horseback riding offers mentally, emotionally and physically handicapped folks of all ages the opportunity to gain coordination and self-esteem.  The horses at Rivendell are warm and friendly.  The volunteers are second-to-none!  And now you too can make a contribution to the magic that is Rivendell.  Join us!
