2005 AUCTION Our November 4th Horsin' Around Rivendell event was a complete success. Several hundred people were in attendance and Rivendell ReCreation's therapeutic horseback program raised nearly $2000! This will provide horse chow, veterinary care and perhaps even some horseshoes for the lovely kind horses of Rivendell. All of the Art Horses were auctioned off - lots of folks went home with the horse of their dreams. We also raised $100 for the Louisiana SPCA through the sale of our three Mardi Gras horses. The staff at Samuel's Grande Manor went out of their way to make us all feel that we were "to the manor born" - the promised ice sculpture was spectacular and the carved watermelon horse head was hilarious. I've been told the food was terrific too but I was too "excited" to eat a darned thing! Our auction was a very long auction and we are already working on ideas to make things run a bit more smoothly next year. Hey, this was our first time out of the starting gate, I think we did pretty well for absolute beginners! We really appreciate the dedicated horse or art lovers who stayed with us 'til the end! Next year we also promise to make the "rules" of the auction a bit clearer - apparently some folks did not know about registering with the auction crew to obtain bidding cards and we did not know in advance that proxy bidding would be available through the auctioneer for those who had to leave early. A most unexpected development has arisen since the auction: it seems that some folks purchased Art Horses so that they could donate them back to Rivendell so that we could sell them again and make more money!!! So do not be surprised if you see some familiar equines on display (with price tags) at State of the Art, 1781 Hertel Avenue, Buffalo, NY. We have also been gathering horsey items for the Rivendell Boutique, located at State of the Art. 100% of the proceeds will benefit Rivendell! Lots of people wanted to know where I found the horse balloons. I special ordered them from T.J.'s party supply store in the County Fair Mall on Garrison Road in Fort Erie. THE WINNING ARTISTS - 2005 The Art Horses were entered in the following six categories: 1. Horse Play - The Horse in pun, humor and just plain silliness. 2. Equine Fantasy - Mythological horses: unicorns, flying horses, dream horses and night mares. 3. All the Pretty Little Horses - The most beautiful horse in the world! 4. The Art Horse - The horse as an artist's canvas. 5. The Literary Horse - Famous horses from the printed page or the silver screen. 6. Wild Horses - Any horse that does not fit into any of the other categories, and yes, wild horses! Laura Glista's "Horse of a Different Time and Culture" won the Best in Show (Judge's Choice) Award and Mark Troutman's "Over the Rainbow...and Beyond" won the People's Choice Award.
